How Often Should My Dog Be Groomed?
This is a question that our groomers at Planet Groom are asked all of the time and with our recent influx of new customers, we thought we’d offer some general rules for how to set up a regular grooming schedule for your doggo.
How often should my dog be groomed?
Every 2 Weeks :
Recommended for dogs requiring medicated baths and suggested for those who want to keep longer coated dogs clean between groomings.
[Example: A cocker spaniel with a skin condition who has been given medicated shampoo by a veterinarian.
Medium length or longer Goldendoodles or Labradoodles.]
Every 4 Weeks :
Suggested if you keep your dog on the fluffy side while also brushing them often at home or for dogs with significant undercoats.
[Example: Medium length or longer Goldendoodles or Labradoodles.
Thickly double coated dogs like Huskies or German Shepherds or Pomeranians.]
Every 6 Weeks :
*The most common schedule*
Suggested if you keep your dog’s hair fairly short (but not shaved).
You have a short coat dog that needs regular deshedding.
[Example: Shih Tzus who receive no frills haircuts.
Labrador Retrievers who shed an average amount.]
Every 8 Weeks :
Suggested for pet parents who brush & comb their dogs regularly (every day) or for dogs who may shed, but not terribly.
[Example: Labrador Retrievers who don’t shed a lot, but tend to get stinky.
Shih Tzus who are regularly shaved down (think a summer crew cut).]
These guidelines do not only apply to the examples mentioned above, but we hope that they help you to envision the type of dog or coat that may fit each sample schedule. There are always exceptions to these general rules, but this is the framework we mostly adhere to. We always suggest setting up future appointments due to our ever increasingly busy schedule to ensure that your dog maintains the appropriate time in between groomings.
